technology roadmap : ウィキペディア英語版
technology roadmap

A technology roadmap document is a plan that matches short-term and long-term goals with specific technology solutions to help meet those goals.〔http://www.entrepreneur.com/technology/techtrendscolumnistpeteralexander/article83000.html〕 It is a plan that applies to a new product or process, or to an emerging technology. Developing a roadmap has three major uses.〔Garcia, M.L. and Bray, O.H. (1997). "Fundamentals of Technology Roadmapping". Strategic Business Development Department, Sandia National Laboratories. ()〕 It helps reach a consensus about a set of needs and the technologies required to satisfy those needs; it provides a mechanism to help forecast technology developments and it provides a framework to help plan and coordinate technology developments.
Before one prepares plans or documents, however, it is important to define the two concepts involved. Technology is the design, means and methods to take material(s) and make it(them) into something that has or had commercial significance. A roadmap is therefore a storyboard of past, present, and the future of technological advances among sellers and buyers focused to meeting a cost or performance target in industrial terms.
For example, aluminum is not a technology, but a lightweight element, however anodizing of aluminum has technological significance in terms of a roadmap - past, present, and future. Anodizing may be used to deliver pleasing appearances of surfaces or corrosion and abrasive resistance, these all being performance attributes of commercial significance. The precise manner in which anodizing; also essentially the formation of oxides on the surface of aluminum and coloring is well guarded secret among competitive practitioners and is a growing technology in today's world. Another case example, is the quintessential electric () light bulb invented by Thomas Alva Edison over 100 years ago using high resistance wire material protected in a glass ampule. It was considered new technology about when it was patented, and impacted consumers in a big way. Patent expiring and many years later, the electric () light bulb is now slowly being phased out, by CFL and LED technologies today due to higher efficiency realized by sellers in converting electrical energy to light for home or industrial use. Both these short descriptions, one for anodizing aluminum and two for light bulbs, serve as brief technology road-maps, which may be expanded to any level of detail or complexity by various experts in the field.
Cost and performance are both simultaneously significant to technology road-mapping for product commercialization. Costs can be a driver or performance or both. Product costs are in most simple terms the raw material commodity costs added to processing costs. The processing costs are both a function of amortized capital equipment investment and the individual value added process costs in a manufacturing plant. Scale-ability of technology is considered important for overall customer adoption and use.
Is software or code considered technology? Not exactly, since it needs CPU and memory hardware to compile which may then have to do with new technology of faster processing speeds or parallel computing, both enabled by hardware with the use of silicon materials in chip building. Software does however need to be optimized and bug-free to deliver the full performance of the hardware to the end user. Does software coding practices involve technology? Yes, they do because the selection of language and operating system, made in conjunction with hardware, is key to delivering quality in functioning systems to the end user. "Software technology roadmaps" is less meaningful a term than software business strategy or deployment strategy in that market.
== The Roadmapping process ==
The Technology Roadmapping Process conducts 3 phases (see figure 1.): preliminary activities, the development of the roadmap and the follow-up activities phase. Because the process is too big for one model the phases are modeled separately. Only the first two phases are considered. In the models no different roles are made, this is because everything is done by the participants as a group.
